What's worse, some publishers may force studios to sell their IPs to the publisher, and it's often a downward spiral for the studio who become fully dependant on the publisher for income. It's hard to blame the publishers because they're the ones who assume the most risk in this case. This is actually the reason why Alan Wake 2 has not been made years ago. Vast majority of publishers either have specific projects in mind, or put in place requirements which directly restrict the developer's creative freedom. For Control, Remedy demanded 100% creative freedom and 505 was one of the few publishers who would be willing to agree to such deal. Unless you have the funds to develop the game on your own, you need someone to fund your project, which is where the publisher comes in.
